It started with a little bit of rain and a cloudy sky Friday morning in Marion County, but by Saturday morning nearly 11 inches of snow was reported in Hillsboro while Marion had between five and six inches. Hap Waddell of Marion is pictured as he enjoys the snow and slides down a hill near Luta Creek in downtown Marion.

SPC Molly Holub, daughter of Dan and Rhonda Holub of Marion, has deployed to Iraq for a second tour. She is trained and assigned as a dog handler for a Specialized Search Dog that specializes in bombs.

Area youth served as pages March 17 for Rep. Bob Brookens in the Kansas House of Representatives and are pictured with Lt. Gov. Mark Parkinson. The youth include Nick Meyer of Tampa, Zack Robson of Marion, Douglas and Austin Calam of Hillsboro, and Timothy Stuchlik of Lincolnville.

An article by staff writer Rowena Plett tells of Ladd Helmer’s hobby of making items of barbed wire. Helmer says the money he earns from his hobby made it possible to reduce his farming operation as he neared retirement age.
