The American Red Cross blood drive June 27 was a success. Six gallon pins were given to Neva Cooper and Rich Schlehuber; seven gallons, Laverne Bina; 11 gallons, Ron Kreutziger; and 15 gallons, Janet Bryan.

Marion County Road and Bridge Superintendent Jim Herzet resigned his position Thursday during a county commission meeting. His resignation was effective at 3:30 p.m. Friday. The commission accepted his resignation and agreed to pay him for all unused sick and vacation leave.

Three Peabody residents who were found guilty early Thursday morning after a jury deliberated for more than 16 hours. They each could be sentenced to a minimum of nearly 37 years to more than 163 years for their crimes committed in 2010 against a then 14-year-old Peabody girl.

Members of the Dorcas Society of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Marion are crocheting plastic shopping bags into 3’ x 6’ sleeping mats which will be donated to people in need in Haiti. Dorcas members say the mats are noticeably more comfortable than lying on the hard floor or ground.

In an interview with staff writer Adam Stewart, Virgil Clark of rural Burns reports on a trip he and his son Charlie shared in June with other WWII veterans to the National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Doug Taylor of Hillsboro started about four or five years ago making airplane-shaped weathervanes to give to family members and friends. Taylor started about a month ago to make an enterprise out of the vanes, selling them at crafts shows. He also makes picture frames, television cabinets, and other crafts.
