When an issue is defeated, we do not think it displays either good judgment or sound police to strive to keep it alive. We do not see the necessity of fighting the battes of the war over again and shall not now be drawn into a controversy concerning the effort to have Fairmount and Clifford townships attached to Marion County and enable Peabody to bring on a county seat fight.
This annoying county seat turmoil seems to be kept up continually. In the meanwhile, our grand, beautiful county is to be crippled in every department — he rich valleys and prolific uplands inviting the immigrant but receiving him not; her citizens halting, hesitating in the matter of investments and improvements; her people constantly quarreling like curs over a bone. In the name of common sense and in behalf of your own interests, people of the county, we ask how long shall this thing continue?
The way some fellows prowl around the calaboose as the structure goes up suggests that they are watching to see if any weak places are left in the wall. Knowledge is power.
The Florence debating society is hereby challenged to appoint any number of representatives to meeting a like number from the Marion Centre Athenaeum at any time or place to discuss any question.
John Fox, near Marion Centre, has in his possession an aged relic. It is a tin tobacco box for pocket use bearing the name of his great-great-great-grandfather, Thos. Tinsley, and the date 1752, making it 124 years old. It is in good repair, the spring and hinge stout and strong. The gusto with which Mr. Fox attacked the contents of the tin shows how the box and the habit have come down together through the generations.
