Thanksgiving is an American holiday, except at Burns, Kansas, where it has taken on an international atmosphere for nearly 40 years. It started in 1954, when 10 students from the University of Kansas were invited to Burns for the holiday.

Jim Sharp, father of Doug Sharp of Marion, showed slides and artifacts to Kiwanians Monday noon and gave his impression of Nazi leaders under his charge as a guard of top Nazis during the Nuremburg War Crimes of World War II.

Santa and Mrs. Claus visited with 123 children Sunday afternoon.

Alex and Nicki Case were guests at the recent Kmart Memorial Invitational Gala Ball at Fairlane Manor in Dearborn, Michigan. Celebrities they met included Kelli McCarty, Miss USA ’91, a fellow Kansan from Liberal; golfer Jack Nicklaus; Hal Linden, who was Barney Miller; Leslie Nielson of “Naked Gun”; Spanky McFarland, the “Our Gang” kid; Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers; ice skater Scott Hamilton; and others.

Students from Marion High School scheduled to participate in the High Q Super Tournament at Washburn University Saturday are Lesley Sieger, Hannah Bennett, Elly Barta-Moran, LeAnn Hiebert, and David Rowe.

More than 180 people attended the annual community dinner on Thanksgiving Day. Volunteers worked from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. preparing and serving the meal and cleaning up afterward.
