Horst Durrschmidt of Lindau, Germany, stopped to eat at the Stone City Café in Marion Monday. Durrschmidt is crossing the Unites States by bicycle. He left Los Angeles Aug. 31 and, traveling 90 miles a day, expects to be in New York by the end of September.

Jim Versch, volleyball coach at Marion High School, has seen the highs and lows of his sport. His team won the state championship in 1991. Last year, it had a record of 3-20. He expects to be closer to the highs this year.

Florence’s annual Labor Day celebration starts Friday and runs through Monday. Festivities include a medallion hunt, street dance, gospel concert, ice cream social, pet show, parade, and many other interesting activities.

This week’s entry in the Marion County Record’s annual Produce Derby is by Luke Bowers, son of Greg and Mary Beth Bowers of rural Marion, He is understandably proud of the tomatoes from his garden. Each of the ones pictured are two pounders, or more. Luke has many of that size.
