Five generations gathered Oct. 4 at Marion Manor to wish Joe Scharenberg a happy 100th birthday. They were Joe’s daughter, Lois Jost of Marion, and granddaughter Gaila Falls and Gaila’s son, Jeff Falls, holding his son, Alex Falls, all of Little Rock.

Family reunions reported in this issue include the seventh annual reunion of the Phillip Deines Sr. family; a reunion of Gutsch cousins; the 40th annual Bredemeier reunion; an annual reunion of descendants of August K.F. and Emma Schwanke Koch, and the second reunion of the Silhan family.

Donna Erpelding of Manhattan was one of two recipients of a 1993 Nancy Landon Kassebaum Award. She received a monetary award of $2,000 and will be eligible for the Kansas Teacher of the Year award sponsored by the state Department of Education. Erpelding’s parents are Mr. and Mrs. John Spachek of Lincolnville.

A ribbon cutting Sunday by Marion Chamber of Commerce celebrated the opening of Country Dreams bed and breakfast by Kent and Alice Richmond. The inn is located northeast of Marion.
