Recent news about President Nixon’s funeral prompted local people to remember family connections to the burial of another president. W.H. Gilbert, grandfather of Lester and Lawrence Gilbert and Verna Gilbert Propp, was one of the men given the duty of guarding the body of assassinated president Abraham Lincoln in 1865.

Vo-ag instructor Mark Meyer is the week’s teacher of the week. In addition to his teaching duties, Meyer is assistant football coach and FFA sponsor.

Jaimie Steiner of Pilsen is one of more than 50 U.S. and foreign students who have been selected to attend the U.S. Department of Energy high school science student honors program at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, Tennessee

Banker Dorman Becker of Durham is selected this week as Amy Smith’s person “who made a difference.”

Marion Boy, Girl, and Cub Scouts recently received camping equipment courtesy of the Coleman Co., Wichita. They received five tents, six lanterns, five stoves, a 16-piece enamel cook set, eight sleeping bags, a five-gallon jug, and a 68-quart cooler.
