Resurfacing work began last week on the 2,600-foot runway at Marion Airport. The renewed landing strip, with no completion date set, is the first major maintenance to the field since 1976.

A major break in the main water line leading from Florence’s city springs to the town’s standpipe left the community without water for portions of Thursday night and all day Friday.

This week’s Produce Derby produced Kentucky Wonder beans, bell peppers, and burpless cucumbers from the garden of Mrs. Lawrence Winkley, twin “Patty Pan” squash on one stem from Mrs. Benard Stromberg of rural Florence, and two five-pound cantaloupes displayed by seven-year-old John Jirak but grown in the garden of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Francis Jirak.

Two teachers from Marion will be part-time instructors at Tabor College this year. Joann Good will serve as instructor of Spanish. She also teaches foreign language at Hillsboro High School. Pat Jackson, Marion High School political science instructor, will also teach a course at Tabor in Comparative Government during the fall semester.

Delano O’Dell of Florence has been named full-time deputy with the Marion County Sheriff’s Department. The appointment increases the number of sheriff’s officers to four.
