Groundhog Day, or Candlemas Day, is Feb. 2 of each year. Groundhog Weekend activities in Marion will include pancakes served all day Saturday at the Legion. There will be special entertainment and half price sales on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. A “groundhog queen” will be chosen Saturday afternoon. Candidates are Larry Loomis, Larry Reiswig, Jim McPheeters, Jeff Brewer, Dave Stroud, Dennis Parks, and Larry Lillard.

Emil Heyland of Peabody received the Goodyear Award Monday evening at Marion County Conservation District’s annual meeting. Banker award winners were Paul Krause of Lincolnville, John J. Funk of Hillsboro, Carrol Logan of Peabody, Raymond Schmidt of Goessel, and Arnold Mueller of Tampa.

Seventeen Boy Scouts participated Monday evening in a Pinewood Derby at the American Legion building. Race winners include Eric Kline, 8, first place; Jeremy Schlehuber, 9, second place; and Mike Wheeler, third place. Wheeler also won first place in the Judges’ Choice category of design competition. Dale Heidebrecht won second place.
