The victorious Marion High School gridiron eleven met and defeated Council Grove Friday evening to cinch first place in the Cottonwood Valley League.

At worst, the Warriors will be at the top in a three-way tie with Peabody and Council Grove. If they defeat Peabody in the annual “Turkey Day” game, they will hold the title all by themselves.

The Rev. Paul Meier, pastor of the newly organized St. Mark’s parish of 60 Catholic families, has announced work is progressing rapidly in razing the old church building and building a new church at the corner of Cedar and Sherman Sts. in Marion.

Pistol teams of Marion County police officers came away with a lion’s share of honors Tuesday in a competition at Wichita.

First team members Jim Kline, Louis Van Horne, Fred Michaels, and Leo Regier took first place and second team members George Baxter, Henry Loveless, Roy Wait, and Vic Herbel took fourth.

The Chamber of Commerce will sponsor a banquet in the near future for the undefeated Marion Junior High School football team. The team won all six of their games this season and earned the respect of their opponents for good, clean playing.

The team includes Bruce Wingerd, Donald Winters, Keith Hyde, Gale Hiebert, David Montgomery, Dwight Kruse, Edward Davies, Robert Meisinger, Gerald Stage, Sam Jewett, Jerry Richards, Paul Roberts, John Williams, Verlin Meier, Jerry Seifert, Dick Hoch, Laurence Griggs, Joe Dvorak, Archie Stenzel, Leon Lais, John Waner, and Bob Hiebert.
