“A lot of us don’t know the first few years”

Staff writer

Ryan August graduated from Centre High School in 2019 with a 4.0 grade point average.

He knew he wanted to go to college and settled on attending Emporia State University. It was close to his home in Lincolnville, and he liked the campus.

He graduated this month summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in math and a minor in computer science. Summa cum laude signifies graduating “with the highest distinction.”

“The math department was a delight,” he said. “The professors were very kind and knowledgeable about the things I wanted to learn. It was a very positive experience.”

He plans to pursue graduate studies while working.

He tells high school students not to worry if they don’t know what they want to pursue.

“A lot of us don’t know the first few years,” he said.

He also advises students to start applying for scholarships as soon as they get into high school.

“You’ll get through it,” he said.

David and Michelle August are his parents.
