Centre board member Eric Carlson said he thinks a new white modified bitumen roof the board approved for the high school gymnasium will distract from the school’s appearance.

The board met in special session March 26 to take action on replacing the roof that was damaged by strong winds March 20.

During a break in the meeting, Wray Roofing’s Craig Helser of Wichita walked the roof with Carlson.

“It looked fine,” Carlson said afterward. “I’m just concerned about the aesthetics of the new roof.”

Helser said the present roof was improperly installed 16 years ago. It had a lightweight deck with wood frames made of 1x4 lumber on which to attach shingles.

Helser recommended using roofing the company has placed on other parts of the school. It is a moderated bitumen, or asphalt.

“Why should we use your roofing?” Carlson asked.

Helser said it was better than shingles for a country location.

The board, including Carlson, approved a new roof to be installed by Wray Roofing for $80,800. Centre district will pay a $25,000 deductible. Insurance will pay the remainder.

Temporary repairs made a few days after the windstorm by Wray Roofing cost $29,404. The cost was covered by insurance.

The board also approved the purchase of new weight room equipment, not to exceed $25,000.

Representatives of Gravity Works Architecture, El Dorado, presented a plan and cost estimate for replacing a building near the football field that houses a weight room, restrooms, and concession stand, and adding two classrooms to the west side of the elementary school. The board took no action following the presentation.
