Bullet shatters school window

Staff writer

A bullet recently shattered a large window east of the main entrance doors on the south side of the building at Centre schools.

Superintendent Susan Beeson said officials became aware of the damage Monday morning and called Marion County Sheriff’s Department.

“Our goal was to investigate to determine actions to take to keep the students and school safe,” Beeson said Monday. “It was a double-paned window, very strong. We are securing the area with Plexiglas today, and plan to replace it with bullet proof glass soon.”

After reviewing footage from school surveillance cameras, police told her that the window was likely shot from beyond camera sightlines.

“They were not able to find anything or see anyone on our local cameras,” Beeson said. “It appears the shot probably came from a hunting rifle.”

Officials are unsure if the damage was accidental or intentional, Beeson said. There was no other damage to the building.
