Staff writer

The Centre Cougars are on a roll. For a second consecutive week, the team caused an early end to a game by outscoring their opponents by more than 45 points. The Cougars defeated Herington on Friday at Bud Peterson Field, 62-14.

The Railers were first receivers and scored a touchdown and two extra points in 1 minute and 40 seconds. Seven seconds later, Max Svoboda carried the ball 38 yards for a Centre touchdown.

Centre’s Jensen Riffel recovered a Herington fumble at the Railers’ 13-yard line and ran for another touchdown, giving Centre a 14-8 lead.

Herington went on to score its second and last touchdown of the night with 5 minutes remaining in the first quarter. After a missed conversion, the teams were tied, 14-14.

From then on, the game was squarely in Centre’s court as the Cougars scored on every possession, while the Railers were forced to punt or turn over the ball on downs.

Riffel scored five more touchdowns, Espinoza had an interception for a touchdown, and Max Svoboda ran 61 yards to score. The game was called at 2:10 in the third quarter.

Centre kept the ball on the ground throughout the game and outrushed Herington 292 to 162 yards on the same number of carries. Max Svoboda was the leading rusher, with 11 carries for 163 yards.

Max Svoboda scored 6 extra points, and his brother, Aiden, scored 2.

Centre has a record of 2-1. They will play at Burlingame on Friday.
