Centre has new athletic director

Staff writer

The most challenging aspect of Sheldon Patton’s position as the new athletic and activities director at Centre is the collaboration required in scheduling activities.

“Getting everybody on the same page is challenging,” he said. “There are a lot of moving parts, and they have to work together like a fine-tuned machine.”

He said technology helps make the process easier.

Patton served on student council and participated in Fellowship of Christian Athletes while attending Emporia High School. As a senior, he mentored fourth-grade students.

Patton is somewhat of a sports nut. He participated in three sports every year in high school. Altogether, he played four years of varsity football, three years varsity track, four years powerlifting, and one year of baseball.

He was a personal trainer at an Emporia health club while attending Emporia State University.

Patton taught for three years at Chaparral before coming to Centre. He was assistant coach for high school football and wrestling, and head coach for junior high football and wrestling.

Patton replaces Greg Wyatt, who retired last spring. He already is working with other schools in the Wheat State League to schedule events for the next school year.

“Luckily, I have a lot of mentors,” he said. “They make sure I have what I need.”
