Centre splits parents’ night games Friday

Staff writer

The last home games for Centre Cougar seniors resulted in a 58-45 victory for the boys and a 46-33 loss for the girls against Chase County.

After a rocky 2-7 start in the boys game, Centre took a 10-9 lead with three minutes to go in the first quarter. After Zach Barney made the first basket, Cole Srajer made 2 buckets and 1 free throw, and Cody Svoboda made a trey, a layup, and 4 free throws, resulting in a 16-10 lead at the end of the quarter.

Chase County closed the gap to 2 points at halftime, but the second half belonged to the Cougars. They led by 11 points after three quarters and won by 13 points.

Srajer led scoring with 19 points, followed by Svoboda with 18.

With the win, the Cougars have an overall record of 14-4. They finished second in the league with a record of 7-1, behind Solomon, which has the same record but gave Centre its only league loss.

Girls

Poor shooting from the field for a second time last week resulted in another loss for the Cougars.

After trailing by 8 points at halftime, the girls outscored Chase County 7-4 in the third quarter, coming within three points once.

Good outside shooting and transition baskets by Chase County in the fourth quarter allowed them to pull away and hand Centre a 13-point loss.

“We got to the free throw line a lot, but only shot 50 percent,” coach Alan Stahlecker said. “We shot 21 percent from the field and were outrebounded 42-32.”

All eight players scored. Kelsey Hett led with 9 points, and Emily Schlesener had 8. Kate Basore had 10 rebounds and Janel Dones had five rebounds, four assists, five steals, and a block.

Centre’s record is 9-9.
