Staff writer

Centre boys and girls teams spoiled Peabody’s homecoming by defeating the Warriors on Friday. The boys won, 55-34. The girls won, 61-34.

It was the third time in two weeks that the Centre boys played Peabody and won.

Consistent scoring throughout four quarters and good shooting from the free throw line boosted them to a 21-point victory. They led scoring 15-11, 12-8, 12-8, and 16-7.

Three Cougars scored in double digits: Jensen Riffel, 14; Braxton Smith, 11; and Dalton Stika, 10. Other contributors were Jacob Hird, 7; and Lane Methvin, 4. Luke Hudson came off the bench to score Centre’s final two points.

Centre’s record is 6-6 overall and 2-2 in the league.

Girls double up Warriors

The girls game was a clear victory for Centre, although they started slow with an eight-point deficit. A 21-point second quarter compared to three points by the Warriors, gave the Cougars a substantial lead. They led 34-15 at halftime and won by 27 points.

Alyssa Espinoza was hot from the three-point line, with five, all in the first half. She scored 21 points. Kelsey Hett scored a game-high 27 points including seven of nine free throws and two 3-pointers.

Other scorers were Samantha Espinoza, 8; and Lili Espinoza, 4.

“I wasn’t happy with our slow start, but we finally got it going,” coach Alan Stahlecker said. “Alyssa was hot, and Kelsey had a good game. Peabody-Burns’ No. 1 is quite a player.”

The girls’ record is 5-7 overall and 1-3 in the league.
