Chase suspect returns to face charges

A Wichita man was jailed Thursday to face charges from a crime spree and high-speed chase last spring.
Charges in Marion County relate to a multi-county high-speed chase May 12, theft of a vehicle, and burglaries to vehicles.
Fernando Figueroa-Rosello, 47, Wichita, is being held in lieu of $10,000 surety bond.
Figueroa-Rosello was charged July 2 in Marion County with fleeing or attempting to elude while operating a stolen vehicle, two counts of burglary, three counts of theft, and single counts of failure to yield, unlawful use of turn signals, and driving on the left side of the roadway.
His first appearance in court is scheduled for this morning.
The charges stem from an incident in which Figueroa-Rosello and two other men allegedly stole a vehicle and broke into cars in Hillsboro, then drove to McPherson County, where they broke into more cars and a Canton food store.
Hillsboro police said Figueroa-Rosello drove at speeds of up to 106 mph, veered south off US-56, and began a dangerous grand tour of multiple city streets in Hillsboro.
It ended nine minutes later on Holly Rd., just west of the Hillsboro airport.
Although the crime spree began in Hillsboro, McPherson County deputies were in pursuit. They contacted Marion County officers for help apprehending Figueroa-Rosello.
As many as three police vehicles, two residential yards, and possibly a utility pole were damaged in the Marion County portion of the chase.
After weaving through Hillsboro, the stolen car was bumped by Hillsboro officer David Funk’s cruiser, which was close behind on a rain-slickened sand road. Figueroa-Rosello drove into a muddy field, and the car’s three occupants fled on foot.
McPherson County deputies took the suspects into custody. They were booked into the McPherson County jail.
Three cases were filed against Figueroa-Rosello in McPherson County for burglaries and thefts there. He pleaded no contest in one case. The other two cases were dismissed.
The other men arrested were Javell Q. Evans, 21, Wichita, and Patric G. Patterson, 26, McPherson. Patterson’s father lived in Hillsboro at the time.
Evans formally was charged July 7 in Marion County District Court with two counts of vehicle burglary and three counts of theft. The case is pending.
