Staff writer

The Centre girls’ team lost by one free throw Friday at Elyria Christian School; the boys lost by 32.

Their last home games were Tuesday against Canton-Galva. Three seniors were recognized: Xavier Espinoza, Tanner Wiggins, and boys’ team manager, Mickey Spohn.

Girls

The Lady Cougars looked to be headed for victory at Elyria as they led most of the game. However, after leading 22-15 after three quarters and having a nine-point lead in the fourth, they turned the ball over numerous times in the last minute or so, and lost, 27-26.

Their record after Friday was 10-8 overall and 4-5 in the Wheat State League.

Boys

With their leading scorer on the bench, the boys’ team struggled against the Eagles. Elyria was hot from beyond the arc, hitting six treys in the first half.

Despite two treys by Dalton Stika in the first quarter, Elyria led 16-6. Lane Methvin, Jensen Riffel, and Aidan Svoboda combined for 10 points in the second quarter but Elyria led 34-16 at halftime.

Lop-sided scoring continued in the second half as Riffel scored Centre’s only two points in the third quarter and Jacob Hird making all three in the fourth. Elyria added 19 and won, 53-21.

After Friday’s game, Centre fell below the 500 mark overall with eight wins and 10 losses, but remained above it in the league at 5-4.
