Crafty Cactus encourages creativity

Staff writer

As small, specialty businesses continue to face long odds in rural communities, Crafty Cactus quietly established itself as a steady presence in Marion, approaching its third year of operation this summer.

The space, co-owned by Christina Hett and Barb Alleven, has remained active by focusing on a core mission: giving local artists and crafters a place to show and sell their work while keeping creative opportunities accessible.

The shop regularly features work from around 50 vendors. According to Hett, roughly 80% of the vendors have been with the store since it opened.

Unlike many vendor-based retail spaces, Crafty Cactus does not charge booth rent. Instead, it takes a percentage of sales, a model that allows artists to participate without financial pressure.

Removing monthly fees makes it possible for artists to keep work on display even when sales are slow.

“It’s a small town,” Hett said. “Things don’t fly out the door.”

The store’s inventory reflects a range of media, including jewelry, woodwork, metal art, photography, textiles, soaps, and paper goods. The only requirement is that items be handcrafted.

Crafty Cactus also has carved out a role as a low-cost creative space, particularly for children. The shop offers “make-and-take” projects and seasonal classes, with most activities priced at less than $10. Summer programming includes weekly classes aimed at elementary-age students.

That focus has become increasingly important as arts funding in schools has declined. By keeping costs low and supplies readily available, the shop fills a gap that many families might otherwise be unable to afford, Hett said.

In a county where creative work often is pursued quietly and at home, Crafty Cactus has helped bring visibility to artists who might not otherwise seek an audience.

The shared space has given some vendors the confidence to expand beyond Marion, including participation in regional shows, Hett said.

As it approaches its third anniversary, Crafty Cactus continues to operate with modest expectations but steady commitment. The reliability of being open when scheduled and maintaining a welcoming, functional space has been central to remaining relevant.
