Don Jolley

Don Jolley, 92, Marion, died Nov. 11. He was born Feb. 12, 1928, to Pearl and Mel Jolley.

After graduating from high school, serving in the Army, and receiving a degree from the University of Missouri at Kansas City, he began work for the Kansas City, Kansas, recreation department.

His career path began when he moved his family to Parsons as the city’s new superintendent of recreation. From there, they relocated to Pittsburg. Finally, he ended his career in Salina in 1988.

He became president of Kansas Recreation and Park Association in 1961. On the national scene, he served in many capacities, and ultimately was chosen as president of the National Recreation and Park Association. His awards are too many to mention, but as a visionary in his field, he impacted thousands of people at the local, state, and national levels.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Pearl and Mel, an infant sister, and his wife, Mary Alice.

He is survived by his sister, Doris Smith, his daughters, Jann Fowler and Becky Barrett, 10 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
