Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:
SEPT. 9
4:39 p.m. — A driver who hit a bridge railing, blocking both lanes of US-56 over Timber Rd. and Luta Creek north of Marion, was checked by Marion ambulance attendants but declined to be taken to a hospital. Marion firefighters, only two of whom responded, were paged to control traffic for more than an hour and to wash down the roadway.
9:08 a.m. — A 6-month-old baby having trouble breathing at a home in the 100 block of S. Floral Dr. in Hillsboro was checked by Hillsboro ambulance attendants but not taken by them to a hospital. An ambulance supervisor also responded.
9:15 a.m. — A 79-year-old woman reported by a home health nurse to be confused at a rural Peabody home on US-50 east of Mustang Rd. was taken to NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center, by Marion ambulance
9:29 a.m. — With Marion ambulance still on its call in rural Peabody, Hillsboro ambulance was dispatched to Farm Bureau Financial Services in Marion where a 78-year-old woman fell and hit her head. The woman chose to go to a hospital by private vehicle instead of the ambulance.
2:52 p.m. — A 54-year-old woman who fell at a home in the 800 block of Barker St. in Florence was helped up by Marion ambulance attendants and a Florence firefighter but declined to be taken to a hospital.
SEPT. 10
7:42 p.m. — An unspecified patient was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke Hospital, Marion, to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita.
THURSDAY
1:03 a.m. — A 37-year-old woman struggling to breathe while suffering a possible panic attack at a farmhouse on US-50 east of Alfalfa Rd. was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance. Florence first responders were paged but did not answer.
5:35 p.m. — Marion ambulance left to stand by until 8:02 p.m. at a football game in Peabody.
7:22 p.m. — An 89-year-old man who fell out of his wheelchair and hit his head at a Parkside Homes apartment in Hillsboro was taken to Hillsboro Community Hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.
9:35 p.m. — A 39-year-old man with multiple fractures was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.
FRIDAY
6:55 a.m. — A man who passed out on a toilet at a home in the 300 block of N. Cincinnati Ave. in Burns was taken to Susan B. Allen Hospital, El Dorado, by Marion ambulance. Burns first responders cared for the patient until the ambulance arrived.
11:28 a.m. — An 84-year-old woman feeling stomach pain and vomiting at a farmhouse on 150th Rd. between Holly and Indigo Rds. was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.
4:31 p.m. — An 85-year-old woman with an obstructed bowel was transferred by Marion ambulance from HCH to NMC Health. The call originally went to Hillsboro ambulance but was changed by Marion ambulance attendants.
5:17 p.m. — An Eagle Med helicopter transferred an unspecified patient from HCH to Wesley.
6:25 p.m. — Tampa ambulance left to stand by until 9:37 p.m. at a football game at Centre High School.
6:44 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance left to stand by until 9:16 p.m. at a football game at Hillsboro.
8:02 p.m. — Marion ambulance stood by until 9:17 p.m. at a football game in Marion.
SATURDAY
12:10 a.m. — An anxious man having trouble breathing at a farmhouse near 150th and Eagle Rds. was taken to NMC Health by Hillsboro ambulance. A Hillsboro firefighter was paged to drive the ambulance.
6:58 p.m. — A 65-year-old woman in declining health at Peabody Health and Rehab was taken to NMC Health by Marion ambulance. The call originally went to Hillsboro ambulance, but Marion ambulance attendants volunteered to take it instead.
7:50 p.m. — A small fire in a tractor’s mowing attachment at a farm near 160th and Holly Rds. was extinguished within 25 minutes by Hillsboro firefighters.
SUNDAY
12:57 p.m. — A 66-year-old woman unable to move without her legs cramping at Hilltop Manor apartments in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.
1:16 p.m. — A ditch fire a mile south of Durham on K-15 was extinguished within 25 minutes by Durham firefighters.
8:25 p.m. — A 67-year-old man who fell outside a farmhouse near west of the US-56/77/K-150 runabout was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.
11:26 p.m. — Marion ambulance was dispatched to transfer what appeared to be the same patient from St. Luke to Wesley, but the call was canceled after Wesley informed St. Luke that it did not have a bed for the patient. Nearly an hour later, the ambulance again was paged to make the transfer, but this time to St. Francis.
MONDAY
11:53 a.m. — A 69-year-old man with possible heart issues at a house in the 500 block of Topeka Ave. in Lincolnville was taken to St. Luke by Tampa ambulance. Marion ambulance and a Lincolnville first responder cared for the patient until Tampa ambulance arrived.
5:06 p.m. — Tampa ambulance left to stand by until 7:42 p.m. at a football game in Goessel.
8:40 p.m. — A 55-year-old woman with anemia was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Wesley.
9 p.m. — Smoke coming from a car that hit a deer on K-15 just north of the county line was determined by Goessel firefighters to be steam from the car’s radiator. Firefighters also provided traffic control until a deputy arrived, and the vehicle could be towed.
11:19 p.m. — Still returning from Wichita, Marion ambulance was directed back to St. Luke to transfer to Wesley a 26-year-old woman who suffered a seizure.
