Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:
JAN. 20
1:53 a.m. — A 49-year-old woman with cardiac issues was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke Hospital, Marion, to Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita.
10:41 a.m. — A Wichita relative asked that a 55-year-old man be transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from Salem Home, Hillsboro, to a Wichita hospital, but the man declined to be transferred.
4:50 p.m. — An 81-year-old woman with sepsis, a fever, and low blood-oxygen level was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from Parkside Homes in Hillsboro to Hillsboro Community Hospital.
8:04 p.m. — A 65-year-old man with weakness in his legs at a home in the 500 block of S. Cedar St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.
9:41 p.m. — An 87-year-old woman having trouble breathing at Parkside Homes assisted living was taken to NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center, by Hillsboro ambulance.
JAN. 21
1:12 a.m. — A 70-year-old woman with an elevated protein level consistent with suffering a heart attack was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to NMC.
THURSDAY
9:31 a.m. — A 92-year-old woman with leg pain at a home in the 400 block of Main St. in Tampa was taken to St. Luke by Tampa ambulance.
10 a.m. — A 65-year-old man with sepsis was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to NMC.
11:21 a.m. — Fire destroyed a garage and damaged a home and gift shop near Remington and 275th Rds. in Pilsen. Marion, Hillsboro, Lincolnville, Lost Springs, and Ramona firefighters battled the blaze for more than three hours. Tankers ferried water to the fire from US-56 and Timber Rd. in Marion. Tampa ambulance and county emergency managers also responded. Some Lincolnville units remained at the fire until 4 p.m.
3 p.m. — A 78-year-old woman with trouble breathing at Parkside was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance, whose attendants remained at the hospital until 4:11 p.m. to help with the patient.
3:12 p.m. — A trash fire that caught grass on fire near 100th and Eagle Rds. was extinguished within 15 minutes by Goessel firefighters.
3:48 p.m. — A 65-year-old woman dizzy and weak at a house in the 500 block of N. Freeborn St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance. With both full-time ambulances busy, Tampa ambulance was dispatched to Pilsen to stand by until 5:29 p.m. in case of additional calls.
5:38 p.m. — Both people involved in a two-vehicle wreck at Indigo and 170th Rds. declined to be taken to hospitals. Hillsboro firefighters and Marion and Hillsboro ambulances were dispatched for the wreck.
7:13 p.m. — Now diagnosed with cardiac atrial flutter, the 65-year-old woman earlier taken to St. Luke was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance to NMC. The call originally went to Marion ambulance, but Hillsboro attendants volunteered instead.
8:24 p.m. — A grass fire on both sides of US-56 just east of the McPherson County line was extinguished within 10 minutes by Hillsboro and Canton firefighters. Lehigh firefighters also were called but were told they wouldn’t be needed before they arrived.
9:20 p.m. — At a law enforcement officer’s request, Hillsboro ambulance was dispatched to check an emotionally disturbed woman at a home near but the call soon afterward was canceled by the officer.
11:52 p.m. — A fire alarm at Bethesda Home in Goessel was determined to have been caused by a malfunctioning heater that nursing home employees disconnected. Within half an hour, Goessel firefighters ventilated smoke emitted by the heater.
FRIDAY
2:27 a.m. — A 73-year-old woman who fell at a home near 59th and Newell Rds. near Peabody was helped up by Marion ambulance attendants and Peabody firefighters. She declined to be taken to a hospital.
8:39 a.m. — A malfunctioning fire alarm at a home in the 200 block of Meadow Ln. in Marion was deactivated by Marion firefighters.
8:43 a.m. — Firefighters and ambulance attendants — this time, from Hillsboro ambulance — returned to the home near 59th and Newell Rds. after the victim they helped earlier had difficulty moving. This time she agreed to be taken to NMC.
9:20 a.m. — An unresponsive but breathing man at Parkside assisted living was taken to HCH by Marion ambulance. Hillsboro firefighters helped lift him. Tampa ambulance was dispatched to Hillsboro to stand by until 10:58 a.m. in case of additional calls.
4:47 p.m. — An 84-year-old woman complaining of weakness at a home in the 800 block of N. Walnut St. in Peabody was taken to NMC by Hillsboro ambulance.
6:40 p.m. — A 91-year-old man with rectal bleeding at a home near Lakeshore and Hillcrest Drs. at Marion County Lake was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.
9:50 p.m. — What appeared to be the same patient was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.
SATURDAY
8:45 p.m. — A 51-year-old woman in the 900 block of N. Vine St. in Peabody with a swollen mouth after a dental appointment several days earlier declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance. The call initially went to Hillsboro ambulance, but Marion attendants volunteered to go instead.
SUNDAY
5:54 a.m. — At a law enforcement officer’s request, Marion ambulance stood by at the sheriff’s office to check a possibly injured person in custody. The ambulance left without taking anyone to a hospital.
12:19 p.m. — A 23-year-old man with chest discomfort, palpitations, and a history of heart problems at a home near US-50 and Wagon Wheel Rd. was taken to NMC by Marion ambulance.
2:23 p.m. — A person who suffered a head injury in a two-vehicle wreck at US-50 and Sunflower Rd. declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance. Peabody firefighters also were dispatched.
4:44 p.m. — An 83-year-old man with a blocked urinary catheter in the 300 block of S. Lincoln St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance. Marion firefighters helped lift the man.
8:07 p.m. — Hillsboro, Durham, Marion, and Lehigh firefighters and Hillsboro ambulance were dispatched for what initially was reported to be a structure fire near US-56 and Goldenrod Rd. but subsequently was determined to be a farmer’s authorized burning of brush. The call was canceled before firefighters and the ambulance arrived.
10:03 p.m. — An 80-year-old man with influenza and trouble breathing at Parkside was taken to Wesley by Hillsboro ambulance.
MONDAY
12:10 p.m. — A 74-year-old man with a rapid heartbeat and trouble breathing who fell at a home in the 500 block of Roosevelt Ave. in Tampa was taken to HCH by Tampa ambulance.
12:28 p.m. — A 37-year-old man who fell and hit his head at Peabody Health and Rehab was taken to NMC by Hillsboro ambulance.
7:01 p.m. — Lincolnville firefighters stood by until 9:30 p.m. at Herington’s fire station to fill in for firefighters there.
7:23 p.m. — Presumably the same 74-year-old patient transported earlier, now diagnosed with tachycardia and kidney injury, was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Salina Regional Health Center.
