Extension to offer strength-training

Staff writer

“Stay Strong, Stay Healthy” is a new strength-training program that will be offered this spring by Marion County extension agent Renae Riedy.

The eight-week program will feature two sessions a week for people 50 years and older.

The morning sessions will include warm-up exercises, strengthening exercises with or without hand and leg weights, and cool-down stretches.

Riedy has undergone special training to teach the class. She said evidence shows that strength training improves balance, enhances flexibility, strengthens bones, and relieves arthritis. It also helps control weight, lifts depression, reduces stress, and reduces heart disease risk.

A fee will be charged. The cost includes an assessment by a Kansas State University professional.

Dates, time, and place have not been finalized, but Riedy hopes to begin the program in late February.

Call Marion County Extension Office at (620) 382-2325 for more information.
