Forgotten memories: A coloring contest 50 years ago

Staff writer

An 11-year-old Tommy Britain found his way into the Marion County Record Memories page last week, but an adult Britain has a hard time remembering what got his name in the newspaper.

Britain won a coloring contest sponsored by the Pillsbury Company 50 years ago, winning a Space Station, Space Crawler Action set.

“Don’t remember what I colored, don’t really remember the space station,” Britain said with a laugh. “But back in the day that was the hot thing you know.”

The year was 1967, the height of the space race and two years before Neil Armstrong stepped foot on the Moon.

“I suppose I was happy and enthusiastic,” he said. “It was back when them robots and space stations and all that.”
