Former cafe seized

The building where Cindy Taylor and crew served home-style food for hungry visitors has been seized by state tax collectors.

Cindy’s Family Café closed in late January after Taylor’s health made her unable to work and paying employees left her insufficient money to live on. She shut the doors, packed up personal possessions that decorated the café, and bid Marion and her business farewell.

After 13 years of various health issues, including back surgery, a hernia, and the need for surgery to repair the hernia, a community fundraiser last fall helped her go to New York to consult a surgeon, but he couldn’t help her.

On Thursday, red signs were posted on the front door and front window notifying the public that the building had been seized for nonpayment of more than $16,000 sales tax.

Taylor’s assets, including the building, were seized for $16,216 in unpaid sales taxes from April through June 2015 and August 2015 through October 2016.

Court records show an attempt to seize her bank assets Jan. 28 was unsuccessful.

County appraisal records list the value of the building as $23,330 and the property as a whole, including land, as $25,840.

After Kansas Department of Revenue sorts through seized assets and returns anything that belongs to someone else, items on the property will be sold at public auction to pay delinquent taxes.

KDOR previously seized Taylor’s property in March 2015 and June 2014. The tax warrant filed in 2015 was for $12,859 for taxes from 2013 through October 2014. A tax warrant filed in 2013 was for $11,070 in taxes from April 2012 through March 2013. A second tax warrant filed in 2013 was for $3,260 in taxes from April through March 2013.
