Goessel’s football season came to an end Friday with Hoxie winning 58-12 in the state quarterfinals.

Jake Wiens caught a pass on the right side of the field and sprinted 51 yards to give the Bluebirds a 6-0 lead, but the game quickly turned from Goessel’s favor.

Both teams punted their second possessions, and then Hoxie scored from 14 yards and the extra points to lead 8-6.

Luke Wiens powered over Goessel’s left tackle at the goal line, as the Bluebirds grabbed a 12-8 lead. The rest of the first half was all Hoxie.

The Bluebirds had to depend on execution and speed, but turnovers proved too much of a factor to overcome in the season-ending loss.

Two Goessel fumbles gave the Indians good field position, and they cashed in by scoring twice to secure a 28-12 halftime lead.

Goessel started the second half by recovering an onside kick, but Hoxie immediately intercepted a pass to kill the drive, and then scored again.

The Indians intercepted another pass and crossed the goal line for the second time of the third quarter to move ahead 44-12.

Defense for both teams was solid to start the fourth quarter, but the Indians churned down the field after recovering another Bluebird fumble.

They scored with 4:28 left in the game to make the deficit 52-12.

The visitors finished the game at 58-12 thanks to a touchdown after Goessel lost another fumble to the Indians.

Eddie Gaeddert led the team with 10½ tackles, while Luke Wiens threw for 55 yards and rushed for 77 yards as Goessel finished the season with a record of 5-4.
