Health issues derail Wendy’s replacement

Staff writer

Rumors of a restaurant opening at the old Wendy’s location, 812 E. D St., almost happened.

Wendy’s closed in November, 2024.

US-56 Café in Galva was planning to open a second location at the location where Wendy’s had been.

However, the woman wanting to open the second restaurant had a heart attack before the deal could be finalized.

“They put the plans on the shelf,” city administrator Matt Stiles said.

US -56 Cafe is just off US-56. It offers a variety of diner food — similar to Florence’s Town and Country Café, but with a larger menu. It is a popular haunt for locals and those passing through, boasting 4.7 out of 5 stars on Google reviews

Before the heart attack the plan was for the restaurant to be open by Thanksgiving.

The building is owned by Sunrise Leasing, including five investors.

Darrell Driggers, executive vice president of Container Services. He is also building duplexes on Ash St.

The city was working with him to find a renter or buyer, Stiles said.

Sunrise Leasing also has hired a real estate agent to find someone to rent or lease the old restaurant.

Calls and messages left with Driggers were not returned.
