Marion boys dominate Council Grove

Staff writer

Marion boys continued their strong play with their eighth win Friday, defeating Council Grove 59-41.

It was Marion’s fourth straight win, and brought their record to 8-6.

The girls were less fortunate. They held a 6-3 lead at the end of the first quarter, but went on to lose 46-26.

The defeat dropped Marion girls to 2-12 on the season.

Boys

The boys dominated the boards against the Braves, snagging eight offensive and 29 defensive rebounds.

Their success was aided by an efficient shooting night, as they made 46 percent of their 2-pointers.

Chase Stringer led the way, shooting 8-of-11, while four of his teammates made at least 50 percent of theirs.

It was one of the team’s best games sharing the ball, too. Of the nine players who saw time on the court, six of them dished an assist, with three tallying at least three.

Scoring summary: Stringer, 17 points, 13 rebounds; Eli Hett, 11; Noah Dalrymple, 11; Sam Zinn, 8; Brandon Ngyuen, 6; Jaxton Tracy, 4; Hunter Helmer, 2.

Girls

The Warriors won the first quarter, and were only outscored 9-8 in the third. Their lack of defense did them in, though, as Council Grove scored 15 in the second quarter and 19 in the fourth.

The Warriors held most of the opposing players in check, but three top scorers from Council Grove combined for 32 points, shooting 11-of-23.

The girls forced eight turnovers, but couldn’t hold onto the ball themselves, as they turned it over 27 times.

While they struggled with holding the ball, the Warriors did a good job of gaining possession following the shot. The team tallied 27 total rebounds, and 10 players had at least one.

Scoring summary: Corrina Crabb, 11 points; Jaden Slifer, 4; Chloe Burkholder, 3; Jayden May, 3; Sam Kelsey, 2; Megan Neufeld, 2; Michaela Regnier, 1.
