Marion split a doubleheader Friday against Inman, losing 7-5 in the first but winning 20-4 in the second.

“Unfortunately, we played with some poor effort on Friday in Game 1 and didn’t do the little things right and we ended up on the wrong side of one,” coach Roger Schroeder said. “It is disappointing for this team as we needed to win the remainder of our league games to clinch a share of the league championship.”

Gavin Wasmuth was credited the victory in Game 2. Trevor Schafers also took the mound in that game.

It only took nine hits from the Warriors to garner 20 runs in the second game.

Schafers and Lander Smith led the team with two hits each.Jack Lanning touched home four times; Schafers, three.

“Overall, sitting at 16-4, we are pleased with where we are at. Regional baseball is right around the corner, and from the looks of things we will be able to host our first round game here in Marion, which is always a great experience for our team.”

The regular season concluded early this week for Marion baseball with Regionals taking place between May 8-15th.

Hillsboro baseball

The Trojan boys have stacked up a few wins late in the season. They swept Canton-Galva early last week and then split a pair Friday with Nickerson, losing 14-8 in the first but winning 10-6 in the second.

Dawson Boldt and Zayne Haslett were on the mound for Game 2.

It took nine hits for the Trojans to score 10 runs in that game. Five players were responsible for 12 bases stolen.

Zander Haslett led the team in steals with four, followed by Zayne with three.

Nash Dickinson hit his second home run of the season in the first game.

Only two games are left in the regular season for Hillsboro. The Trojans’ last home game of the season will be Friday against Pratt.

Hillsboro softball

The Lady Trojans notched their first victory of the season Friday against Nickerson, winning 11-10 in the first game, but losing 10-6 in the second.

“This is what the girls have been working for all season,” coach Alyssa Kroeker said. “This should boost us into the last games of regular season and then regionals.”

It took 12 hits to score 11 runs for Hillsboro in Game 1. Cassidy Bernhardt led the team with four hits, three runs, and one home run.

Khloe Funk hit a home run as well.

Abby Beavers had three hits and three runs while Anslee Brewer had two hits with three runs.

Cheyanne Plenert was credited with Hillsboro’s first victory of the season as the starting pitcher in Game 1. She pitched the entire game.

“She continues to play without focusing on mistakes,” Kroeker said. “It is a team effort and if we continue to play together we could compete with any team.”

Only two games are left in the regular season for Hillsboro. The team’s last home game will be Friday against Pratt.

Marion Softball

Injuries and low numbers continue to plague the end of the season for the Lady Warriors, who dropped two to Inman Friday, 15-5 and 15-2.

“Our Warriors competed from the start and still dealt with the continuing challenge of players going into positions that they have not been experienced in due to injuries and low numbers,” coach Jerry Mendoza said.

The Lady Warriors have a few extra games left in comparison to the boys, who have already finished their regular season this week.

The girls will be playing double headers Thursday against Ell Saline and then senior night Tuesday at home against Bennington.

“We are preparing for a strong finish, and I believe the Lady Warriors are up for the challenge,” Mendoza said.
