MORE

The newspaper welcomes brief letters (generally no longer than 400 words) that express an opinion on a currently newsworthy topic. The writer’s contact information must be included for verification. Letters that contain defamatory comments, open letters, third-party letters, letters sent to more than one publication, and letters that would more appropriately be advertisements, including Cards of Thanks, are unlikely to be published. One letter generally is allowed per writer per calendar month.

More questions than answers

To the editor:

A proposition to expand the county commission to five members raises more questions than answers.

How would districts be divided?

I would suggest, if possible, using established school districts. With already having commissioners from Centre, Hillsboro, and Peabody district, it would be simple to add one from Marion and Goessel.

How about the additional cost for two more commissioners?

Are the salary and benefits going to be the same for all five? It costs more for a five-ring circus compared to the current three-ring.

Should we have a county administrator/engineer?

I think a qualified person with an engineering degree would be beneficial to the county. This person would be in charge of managing the day-to-day county business. Therefore, the commissioners would be more like a school board, with less responsibility, perhaps only needing to meet every other week.

I would even consider running for our district commission, providing commissioners would not receive salary or benefits. This would eliminate those who run for the money and benefits. Under this scenario, we would have qualified people, as the school board does, running for commissioner positions.

Change can and does happen, sometimes for the better.
