Out-of-town swim team wants to use Marion pool

The Sports and Aquatics Center may soon host practices for another school’s swimmers, Marion-Florence superintendent Aaron Homburg told the school board Monday.

“I have been contacted by another school, to be nameless, that has a swim team interested in the possibility of using our pool for their practice,” Homburg said.

The SAC is a better facility for their practices.

“What they have is not anywhere near what they need,” Homburg said.

He said he does not want the other school’s practices to conflict with Marion swimmers. Boys swimming is a winter sport and girls swimming is a spring sport.

“The problem is I don’t want to have another swim team come in and take away from our folks when they normally swim,” Homburg said. “To juggle those things is going to be a little difficult.”

Tabor College’s swim team already uses Marion’s facility. The men’s and women’s seasons run from September to March.

The board approved a copier lease with Image Quest and hired a special education bus driver and substitute driver.

One of the buses needs its hydraulic cylinder fixed as hydraulic fuel is leaking and needs refilled every four runs.

“It’s going to take a while to rebuild the cylinder, and we need the bus every day,” Homburg said.

Board members met behind closed doors for 20 minutes to discuss an individual employee’s performance.

The board will be looking to write new vision and mission statements for the district.

Middle School Principal Missy Stubenhofer said this is spirit week

“This is spirit week, so you’ll see some oddly-dressed middle schoolers during the course of the week,” she said. “As opposed to usually-dressed middle schoolers.”

She said the middle school will host the league volleyball tournament on Tuesday and will be seeded No. 1.

Marion High School football moves into 1A classification next year and in 2019, joining Hillsboro, Leon-Bluestem, and Olpe in a district. Marion is the eighth largest of 31 schools in 1A football at 108 students, which bases classification on freshman to junior enrollment.
