Todd Winter, 44, Marion, is in surgical intensive care at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, after he was seriously injured when a utility terrain vehicle he was riding entered a ditch and turned on its side.

An accident report was not yet available Tuesday, but Marion police chief Clinton Jeffrey said preliminary investigation indicated that Russell Hake, 52, lost control of the 2021 Polaris Razor XP while eastbound on Kellison and it entered the street’s north ditch and rolled.

Hake reportedly was not injured. Neither man was wearing a seatbelt, according to police.

Jeffrey said officers had no indication that drinking played a role in the accident, but said officers still were interviewing witnesses.

Winter is set to have his pelvis pinned and a broken hip repaired today by doctors his wife, Shawna Winter, announced.

Surgeons removed a damaged section of his small intestine Monday evening.

Doctors then fused four vertebrae in his spine to repair a compression fracture. Winter also has broken hips, a broken clavicle, and a broken shoulder blade.

Winter initially was trapped when the vehicle rolled over at 9:13 p.m. Sunday, but others helped free him before rescuers arrived at the corner of Kellison and Coble Sts.

“He’s looking like he’s banged up pretty good on his collar bone on his right side and he’s got pretty dark redness on his rib cage,” a Marion EMT said. “His legs are hurting and his abdomen is pretty solid right now.”

Shawna Winter expressed her gratitude for community support.

“The outpouring of kindness has been nothing short of amazing,” she said. “Thank you to everyone that has offered help and said prayers for Todd and our family."
