Roofer's death a surprise

Staff writer

Dave Shiplet, who “probably roofed half the buildings in Marion,” according to sister-in-law Jeannie Wildin, died unexpectedly Sunday at his home.

Shiplet’s death left his wife, Marla, with no money. He had no life insurance and his business account, Shipshape Roofing, is locked up.

The Wildins have set up an account at Tampa State Bank to accept donations to pay funeral expenses.

Wildin said Shiplet, 57, was respectful and always had a smile on his face.

“He was the hardest worker you would ever know,” Wildin said.

He also was an avid golfer and played 18 holes of golf Saturday.

“He had a lot of friends out there,” Wildin said.

Besides his wife, Shiplet leaves a son, Dustin, of Marion, and a daughter, Balee, of Emporia.

His funeral will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the No. 9 green at Marion Country Club.
