Remington Rd.’s many potholes worry residents

Harriet Bina and her husband were driving home from church at Pilsen when they noticed cars swerving all over Remington Rd.
They were trying to avoid potholes.
“It’s becoming a safety concern,” Bina said.
Spring will bring more visitors to the Kapaun Museum in Pilsen. She and other tour guides worry that holes that have developed in the past two weeks could lead to accidents. Constant freezing and thawing in recent weeks has been hard on roads, causing potholes to develop on chip-seal surfaces, county road and bridge superintendent Jesse Hamm said Tuesday.
His department has had to wait until the weather warmed up this week to begin making repairs.
Tour guide Melissa Stuchlik said tour bus drivers wouldn’t want to bring visitors to Pilsen if the road continues to deteriorate.
They have an option of traveling on US-56/77 through Lincolnville, and come into Pilsen from the north, but they don’t like to go out of their way, she said.
“They like to stick to their GPS directions,” Stuchlik said.
At this point, nothing can be done except to keep patching the holes, Hamm said.
“Bigger patches will be made this summer using a blade,” he said.
The last chip-seal on that nine-mile stretch of Remington Rd. was done in 2017.
