Ryan August tops Centre's class of 13

Staff writer

Centre will graduate 13 seniors in commencement services at 2 p.m. Sunday. Centre does not designate valedictorian or salutatorian, but Ryan August of Lincolnville is at the top of his class.

Counselor Max Venable says Ryan is a “brilliant” student.

“Ryan excels in mathematics,” he said. “He is the only person who has been able to explain calculus to me.”

The 18-year-old senior has maintained a 4.0 grade point average throughout his four years of high school while taking advanced and college classes.

He is a member of the National Honor Society and participates in band.

He came to Centre from Illinois as a seventh grader.

“I think Centre is a great school,” he said. “You can talk to teachers and ask questions. The only downside is that there are less school activities and subjects.”

Ryan plans to attend Emporia State University in the fall with the goal of becoming a business accountant or engineer, or pursuing some other mathematical field.

He is recipient of a Hornet Scholarship and a $2,000 renewable Huntley Scholarship, both from ESU.

He is a Kansas Governor’s Scholar, which means he is in the top 1 percent of Kansas’ high school graduates.

“I hope to strive for a good future,” Ryan said.

David and Michele August are his parents.
