Volunteers laughed as they struggled with the occasional stubborn lengths of cotton batting Saturday during a service project to help Hillsboro’s museums.

Community group 2nd Saturday 2 Serve tackles volunteer projects in the community every second Saturday.

The group has painted houses, conducted coat drives, collected items for the food bank, filled boxes for Operation Christmas Child, and passed out free breakfast burritos on Dec. 12 to anyone who drove by Hillsboro’s Mennonite Brethren Church in place of its annual pancake feed.

This past weekend, the group covered mannequin heads with stockinette and wrapped hangers in cotton batting and fabric.

Hillsboro’s museums were in need of display supplies for hats and clothing, group leader Krista Heinrichs said.

“We are always looking for projects to do and we are open to anything,” said Heinrichs.

Coordinator Steve Fast later told her if he had to buy the 19 mannequin heads they finished Saturday new it would cost the museum about $256 each.

Heinrichs said they were happy to save the museum some money and said the group is looking for a project volunteers can do in February.

“It’s been fun, it’s been rewarding and hopefully we have helped some people,” she said.
