Wrestlers take 4th at dual tournament

Marion High School wrestling team placed fourth Friday in their season opener at a dual tournament in Burlington.

New head coach Tyler McMichael said he was happy with the way his team wrestled despite the outcome of the tournament.

“It was definitely how you want your wrestlers to perform in the first tournament of the year,” he said. “Their conditioning was good. We had several wrestlers go the whole length of a match and finish strong without giving up.”

The Warriors staunchly defeated Eureka 52-24, Royal Valley 42-18, and Garden Plain 48-18.

Forfeiting 18 points on open weights, the Warriors lost to Blue Valley Southwest 42-21, which pitted them against Washburn Rural, where they gave up 30 points for the same reason, and missed third place by merely three points.

“Going into a dual tournament missing five out of 14 weights is always a tough thing to do,” McMichael said. “The guys performed very well and made up the difference from our open weights.  I am very excited to see how we do in a tournament setting when the open weights don’t have as much of an impact.”

The Warriors wrestle again Saturday at Hesston.
