According to James A. Ray, county superintendent of schools, 96 Marion County schools will begin next Monday.

Most of the walls of Marion’s two school buildings have been redecorated this summer. Flat-tone paint was used as far as possible with the money available. In the other rooms, alabastrine was used. Light tans and greens and grays were the colors used.

Stephen Jex, one of the early settlers and long a prominent citizen, visited here several days this past week. He has not been back for 25 years. His present home is in California.

John Alexander has traded his Maxwell for a Studebaker. He liked his Maxwell, but the Studebaker is a larger car, and he traded simply because he happened to have what he thought was a fine bargain offered.

Maude Hannaford’s residence — the old Trenner place just east of the Hill School building — was badly damaged by fire Monday. The roof was practically destroyed, and perhaps all the rooms will have to be re-plastered. All of the furniture downstairs was removed as was some of the furniture on the second floor. The origin of the fire is not known.

Oscar Stauffer of the Peabody Herald has bought the Gazette from George Morgan and will consolidate the two papers under the name of the Gazette. We have not learned of Morgan’s plans.
