Central Park Improvement Committee will sponsor a fall festival 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Central Park. Booths, food vendors, and family activities are planned as a fundraiser for new playground.

Dorothy Melcher was named Kansas State University fan of the game during the Wildcats’ victory Saturday over Colorado. Melcher began attending games in 1969 and has missed just five home contests since.

Jane Vajnar of Tampa finished in first place at the first-ever state spelling bee for senior citizens this weekend at the Bicentennial Center in Salina.

Plans are being made for Marion’s annual community Thanksgiving dinner. A traditional dinner will be served Thanksgiving Day at Marion Middle/High School commons.

Marion High School graduate Katrina Hancock, who has worked at television stations across the country as a sports anchor, was in town Oct. 9, talking to students, telling them what to expect when entering the “real world.”

Down on the Corner and Hair Corner at 162 W. Main St., Marion, opened Sept. 1. Betty Stenzel, a hair stylist for more than 40 years, has her salon in one part of the building while Karen Ehrlich has her handmade items in the other part. A third business, Quilting Quarters, is scheduled to open in mid-October.
