First prize in last Thursday’s weekly children’s drawing, a bicycle, went to Greg Carlson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gary Carlson. Second prize, a baby angel set, went to Carol Colburn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Colburn. Third prize, a switch and go model tank, was won by Charles Tajchman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Tajchman. And roller skates, fourth prize, were won by Derald Bezdek, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Bezdek.

The board of education of Marion USD 408 took a giant step toward construction of the proposed stadium at a special meeting of the board Monday evening. No contract has been signed but it is expected that a contract will be signed within the next few days.

A final pre-Christmas special event has been planned for next Thursday evening from 9 p.m. until 12 o’clock, called “Midnight Madness.” It has several purposes-- to have some good-natured fun, to say “thanks” for patronage through special low-priced specials; and to stage a year-end shelf clearance ahead of inventory.

The Marion County Lake area is on the threshold of having natural gas piped and available to all residents that want it.

Mrs. Randolph Carpenter, widow of the former U.S. district attorney and Democratic congressman of Marion and Topeka, was named this week as honorary chairman of the inauguration of Governor-elect Robert Docking on January 9.

Robert Giles, 27, son of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Giles of Marion, was killed instantly early Saturday morning when the car in which he was riding struck a utility pole at Kellogg and Sycamore in Wichita.

The annual New Year’s Day coyote hunt in the Youngtown area will be held again this year — on Monday, Jan. 2.

Names drawn for prizes at this week’s Cash Day drawing on Wednesday were Mrs. Lester Griffith of Marion who received $50; G.F. Beisel, Marion, $20; Mrs. James Cott, Lincolnville, $15; and G.C. Gilbert, Marion, $5. Lawrence Hanschu of Tampa missed $5.
