Brass concert planned at Peabody church

Staff writer

Sunflower Theatre is renting out St. Paul Lutheran Church in Peabody for a by-donation concert Sunday by McPherson Brass Band.

The 3 p.m. concert will be followed by free desserts made by or donated to the Sunflower Theatre Foundation.

Sunflower Theatre, which is the only true stage in Peabody, cannot be host for activities because of its renovation. The foundation is having the concert at the church to raise funds for the renovation.

“The church has great acoustics,” foundation member Faie Frederickson said.

Frederickson, one of several retired teachers on the foundation board, said exposing Peabody’s children to the arts was one of their goals.

“This is our way to keep the arts alive,” she said. “This is what we need as a community.”

The Peabody-Burns band consists of only 10 students. School bands in neighboring areas also are shrinking. Frederickson hopes the Sunday concert will inspire children to see what is possible with the arts.

“As ex-teachers, that’s important to us,” she said.

Peabody resident Taylor Ensminger will be playing french horn in the band. The foundation wanted to capitalize on that to further inspire Peabody residents.

“We’re trying to focus a lot on our normal people,” Frederickson said.
