County has recorded quakes, too

Sunday afternoon’s magnitude 2.5 earthquake near Assaria, south of Salina, was the 13th quake felt this year in Kansas.

Two of those occurred in Marion County.

One, a magnitude 2.2 quake, occurred at 4:04 p.m. Feb. 13 on Zebulon Rd. between 220th and 230th Rd.

The other, magnitude 2.1, occurred at 5:12 p.m. Jan. 14 south of 290th Rd. between Clover Rd. and the Marion / Chase County line.

None of the quakes caused any noticeable damage. Minor quakes within Marion County typically are blamed on settling of the Nemaha Uplift that either caused or was caused by formation of the Flint Hills.

Eleven earthquakes were recorded in Marion County last year. The strongest was magnitude 2.8 north of 230th Rd. between Alfalfa and Bison Rds.

Earthquakes typically cause damage only at magnitudes exceeding 5.5. The magnitude scale is logarithmic, meaning an increase of one of the scale represents a tenfold increase in earth movement.
