Democracy on ICE?

To the editor:

Around our nation, local police are joining federals in rounding up citizens and residents, often without opportunity to contact their families, their employers, or their attorneys.

The roundups appear to be based on flimsy evidence and unverified accusations, most often in the absence of formal charges. Instead, established law and procedures are set aside with mere opposition to Trump administration goals becoming worthy of unreviewable punishment.

The Trump roundups violate all past expectations of decency, fairness, civility, and rule of law.

It’s high time to stand up to the emergence and practice of this federal Schutzstaffel. It’s time to push back hard against any and all local, county, or state constabularies that participates in the enforcement of this present police lawlessness.

Come on, Republicans! You are the law-and-order party, right? Making trumped-up accusations and hauling people away without due process is a major departure from our Constitution, which was won by overthrowing arbitrary rule imposed by the king in the 1770s — the very foundation of our nation.
