Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

APRIL 1

1:41 a.m. — Hillsboro firefighters were alerted to an alarm at Hillsboro Community Child Care but were told before they arrived that it was a test.

5:18 p.m. — A 75-year-old man having trouble breathing at a home in the 200 block of S. Buller St. in Goessel was taken to Hillsboro Community Hospital by Hillsboro ambulance. Goessel first responders arrived 14 minutes before the ambulance and provided initial care.

5:41 p.m. — A fire alarm at Tabor College’s Jost Hall was determined by Hillsboro firefighters to have been a false alarm, possibly caused by steam from a shower.

6:23 p.m. — A 53-year-old woman having trouble breathing at Hilltop Manor apartments in Marion opted to go to St. Luke Hospital, Marion, by a private vehicle instead of Marion ambulance.

APRIL 2

12:54 p.m. — A 74-year-old man not feeling well at a home in the 800 block of N. Maple St. in Peabody was taken to NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center, by Hillsboro ambulance.

9:40 p.m. — A passerby’s report of a grass fire at US-50 and Sunflower Rd. was found to be a controlled burn before Peabody firefighters arrived.

11:02 p.m. — A 66-year-old woman with an elevated heart rate was transferred by Marion ambulance on an emergency basis from St. Luke to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.

THURSDAY

1:41 p.m. — A 77-year-old woman with heart and seizure issues was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Wesley.

4:49 p.m. — Immediately upon returning to Hillsboro, Hillsboro ambulance transferred a second patient — a 52-year-old man — from HCH to Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita.

5:44 p.m. — Peabody firefighters monitored a controlled burn for 2½ hours at 40th and Mustang Rds.

FRIDAY

12:23 p.m. — An 89-year-old woman needing a bypass and an external pacer was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Kansas Heart.

3:54 p.m. — With Hillsboro ambulance not yet back to its station, Marion ambulance was dispatched to Parkside Homes in Hillsboro to transfer to HCH a 74-year-old woman not feeling well after physical therapy.

SATURDAY

2:14 a.m. — Peabody firefighters, aided for three hours by Burns and Walton firefighters, spent six hours battling a fire in the 200 block of S. Olive St. in Peabody. The fire fully engulfed a rental home containing a large number of propane bottles, collapsed walls, and threatened a garage. Hillsboro ambulance stood by in case of injuries. An emergency manager also responded.

11:07 a.m. — A vehicle fire on US-50 at Kanza Rd. was extinguished within 30 minutes by Peabody firefighters.

2:17 p.m. — A 77-year-old woman having trouble breathing at Sunrise Townhomes in Marion was taken to St. Luke by a backup ambulance based in Marion.

3:31 p.m. — A 90-year-old woman who fell and hit her head at Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church opted to go to HCH by private vehicle instead of Hillsboro ambulance.

5:38 p.m. — A 79-year-old woman with pneumonia was transferred by a backup ambulance based in Marion from St. Luke to NMC Health.

7:38 p.m. — A 90-year-old woman with bleeding in her brain was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita.

SUNDAY

7:30 a.m. — An 81-year-old woman who became dizzy and fell in the 100 block of W. 4th St. in Florence was taken to St. Luke by a backup ambulance based in Marion.

12:23 p.m. — A 73-year-old woman with altered mental status at Parkside Homes declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance, but HCH contacted the ambulance by telephone.

9:05 p.m. — A report of a natural gas odor in the basement of a home in the 200 block of Tanglewood Dr. in Marion was found by Marion firefighters to have been a false alarm.

MONDAY

12:19 a.m. — A 73-year-old woman with altered mental status and post-surgical complications was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from Parkside Homes to HCH.

2:44 a.m. — An Eagle Med helicopter transferred an HCH patient to St. Luke’s Hospital of Kansas City.

4:04 a.m. — A person complaining of a head injury after a one-vehicle accident at US-56 and Ridge Rd. declined to be taken to a hospital by a backup ambulance based in Marion. Marion firefighters dealt with gasoline leaking from the vehicle.

10:20 a.m. — A 48-year-old man having chest pains at a home in the 300 block of S. Cedar St. in Hillsboro was taken to NMC Health by Hillsboro ambulance.

12:31 p.m. — A 91-year-old man who hurt his legs while transferring from a wheelchair at a farmhouse near 110th and Mustang Rds. declined to be taken to a hospital by a backup ambulance based in Marion.

3:03 p.m. — A 36-year-old man with atrial fibrillation was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Ascension Via Christi St. Teresa Hospital, Wichita.

8:09 p.m. — A confused 85-year-old woman with shingles and possibly meningitis was taken by Hillsboro ambulance to NMC Health to from a home in the 300 block of Main St. in Goessel. Goessel first responders were paged but did not answer.

9:44 p.m. — An 85-year-old woman recently released from a hospital and complaining of weakness at a home in the 600 block of Main St. in Florence rapidly declined and stopped breathing before Marion ambulance arrived 14 minutes after receiving the call. A Florence firefighter who had not been dispatched told dispatchers cardiopulmonary resuscitation was being attempted. Hillsboro ambulance arrived 10 minutes after Marion ambulance and stayed for 35 minutes. Marion ambulance remained until 11:24 p.m. but did not transport a patient.
