Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

APRIL 28

12:17 a.m. — Police asked Hillsboro ambulance attendants to check a 67-year-old man using oxygen for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease on US-56 and Kanza Rd. The ambulance took him to Hillsboro Community Hospital. The ambulance then transferred him at 2:52 a.m. to Wesley Woodlawn Hospital, Wichita.

3:33 p.m. — A 48-year-old woman with abdominal pain was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to McPherson Center for Health.

3:57 p.m. — Two people involved in a two-vehicle wreck on US-77 at 120th Rd. were checked by Marion ambulance attendants but declined to be taken to a hospital. A helicopter ambulance also was dispatched, but the call quickly was canceled. Florence firefighters directed traffic until 4:32 p.m. Tampa ambulance was ordered to stand by until 4:25 p.m. at Canada in case of additional calls.

APRIL 29

11:30 a.m. — A 77-year-old man with heart problems was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke Hospital, Marion, to NMC Health, Newton.

5:21 p.m. — A different 77-year-old man with sepsis was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita.

7:47 p.m. — A 62-year-old with gastrointestinal bleeding was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to St. Francis.

THURSDAY

11:37 a.m. — A 32-year-old woman vomiting blood at a farmhouse near 150th and Diamond Rds. declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance. A Goessel first responder arrived five minutes before the ambulance.

2:49 p.m. — Police canceled a call for Hillsboro ambulance attendants to evaluate a suicidal patient at Salem Home in Hillsboro.

3:09 p.m. — A medical alert from a non-existent address in the 500 block of W. 1st St. in Hillsboro was determined by Hillsboro ambulance attendants to be a false alarm caused by accidental activation of a medical pendant at Grand Oaks Apartments.

6:17 p.m. — An 89-year-old man in undetermined condition at a home in the 100 block of N. Birch St. in Hillsboro declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

10:11 p.m. — A 15-year-old girl with appendicitis was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.

FRIDAY

9:47 a.m. — A fire alarm at Westview Manor in Peabody was determined by Peabody firefighters to have been caused by testing.

1:09 p.m. — A 59-year-old man having chest pains at a home in 200 block of W. Main St. in Burns declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance. Burns first responders arrived 15 minutes before the ambulance.

2:25 p.m. — A 72-year-old woman who fell, hurt her head, and began having trouble breathing at a home in the 100 block of S. Ash St. in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

8:33 p.m. — Marion ambulance attendants and firefighters were dispatched to St. Luke to help get X-rays of a young boy with a stick in his chest. The ambulance transferred the boy at 9:21 p.m. to a pediatric trauma unit at Wesley.

SATURDAY

12:55 p.m. — A 70-year-old man with sepsis was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to NMC Health.

1:17 p.m. — A Marion firefighter helped clear US-50/77 in Florence after an oversize load became stuck in the roundabout there.

1:46 p.m. — A leaking natural gas line in an alley in the 400 block of N. Sycamore St. in Peabody was monitored by Peabody firefighters until an Atmos Energy crew arrived. Firefighters and residents extinguished a nearby controlled fire as a precaution.

5:30 p.m. — Details were not broadcast, but Hillsboro ambulance and later Marion ambulance were asked by law enforcement to stand by at some location for an undisclosed reason.

6:04 p.m. — A woman stuck on a toilet at Grand Oaks Apartments in Hillsboro was helped up but declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance. An ambulance supervisor arrived eight minutes before the ambulance.

6:46 p.m. — Marion, Florence, and Peabody firefighters and Marion ambulance initially were dispatched after a neighbor noticed smoke coming from stone restrooms inside Lakeshore Dr. across from Prairie Ln. at Marion County Park and Lake. At Marion firefighters’ request, most responding units were told to stand down while a few Marion firefighters extinguished the fire within half an hour.

8:02 p.m. — Delayed by lack of available ambulances, Marion ambulance transferred an undisclosed patient from St. Luke to NMC Health.

10:04 p.m. — An 89-year-old woman feeling ill with an extremely slow heartbeat at Sunrise Townhomes in Marion was taken on an emergency basis to St. Francis. An ambulance supervisor rode along.

SUNDAY

6:17 p.m. — A 66-year-old man who fell at a home in the 500 block of S. Cedar St. in Marion was helped up but declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.

8:15 p.m. — Marion ambulance returned to the house on Cedar St. and again helped the 66-year-old man who again fell, this time in his garage. He again declined to be taken to a hospital.

MONDAY

11:32 a.m. — A 74-year-old man not responding normally at a home in the 200 block of S. Date St. in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance. An ambulance supervisor also responded.

2:56 p.m. — Goessel firefighters helped lift an 82-year-old man who fell near 29th Ave. and Dakota Rd. in McPherson County.

3:47 p.m. — All three Marion County ambulances, two ambulance supervisors, a helicopter ambulance, and firefighters from Lincolnville, Marion, and Herington were initially dispatched for a three-vehicle wreck involving a school van on US-56/77 south of 290th Rd. in Lincolnville. Most units were told to stand down after a part-time ambulance attendant who was first on the scene reported only one apparently minor injury but a more serious concern about a natural gas meter being hit and leaking a significant amount of gas. Lincolnville firefighters controlled the leak until an Atmos Energy crew arrived. Traffic on the highway was restricted for half an hour. Four people involved in the wreck declined to be taken to hospitals.

4:01 a.m. — Hillsboro ambulance was diverted from the Lincolnville wreck to respond to a report of a medical alarm being activated at a non-existent address in the 300 block of S. 4th St. in Marion. Attendants went door-to-door but could not find anyone who activated the alarm.

4:41 p.m. — A lethargic 8-month-old at a home on US-56 near Upland Rd. was checked by an ambulance supervisor and Hillsboro ambulance attendants but was not taken to a hospital.

8:27 p.m. — A reportedly combative 73-year-old woman with rapid pulse and low blood oxygen level at a home in the 100 block of S. Ash St. in Hillsboro declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

9:50 p.m. — A fire reportedly involving outdoor furniture near a home in the 100 block of S. Washington Ave. in Burns was extinguished within eight minutes by Burns firefighters.
