Hillsboro solar farm moving forward

Staff writer

Hillsboro city council began Tuesday by correcting the tire pickup cost charged by the city.

A previous ordinance accidentally adjusted the cost to an old rate.

The city will charge $10 to pick up car tires, $15 for truck tires, and $20 for tractor tires.

The council also decided Monday to change the time of future meetings to 4 p.m.

Meetings were at 4 for around 20 years before the time was changed to 6 p.m. in 2022, city administrator Matt Stiles said.

Former council member David Loewen had needed the 4 p.m. slot to perform his basketball coaching duties.

The city announced it had sold a lot for roughly $1,500 to Spring Branch Construction at Willow Glen.

Another property, 306 W Grand Ave., was sold for roughly $7,500 to Gary McCloud, who has renovated the house there and plans to put it up for rent.

The house had been donated to the city by a woman who left town and was finding it hard to keep it up to code.

A Kansas Power Pool solar project coming to Hillsboro began with a field meeting, also on Tuesday.

Priority Power, the contractor hired by KPP, has developed a 239-day timeline for the solar farm. Construction is set to start in March, with the farm expected to be operational by early 2026.

The city’s December bill from KPP was $139,381.81.

Indigo Rd. extended north of US-50 will be closed starting Feb 3, as Harvey County will replace a box culvert along the road. The project will last until late April.

The southernmost open street should be 70th St. The city is encouraging residents to use K-15 as an alternative.
